Why You Should Start Doing Bulgarian Split Squats

Variations and Combinations

The Bulgarian split squat is a versatile movement.

"For an added core challenge, I like anterior-loaded Bulgarian split squats with a barbell on your shoulders," Gentilcore says. "I also love the 'goblet' variation, where you hold one dumbbell in front of the body like a goblet."

The offset-loaded alternative is another version that adds a core challenge. Hold a dumbbell on one side of your body, usually the trail-leg side. To mix things up even more, you can combine the exercise with a Romanian deadlift.

Be careful with this variation, though. Gentilcore jokes that this two-for-one exercise "will make you hate life the following day" due to almost inevitable muscle soreness in your glutes, quads and hamstrings.
