5 Best Ways to Enjoy Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

3. Camping

The campground is located at 1,200 feet, in a protected area where no urban trappings are visible. Located on the perimeter of a meadow where deer gather at dusk, the campground offers creek-side campsites and some that are nestled against the base of a ridge.

Tents and RVs co-mingle among the 47 individual sites, sharing a spacious new shower and bathroom facility. One large group site is also available. Evening campfire programs are held during the summer and campers can take advantage of guided nature hikes on the weekends.

Check availability and reserve your spot.

4. Picnicking

Feast under a canopy of trees along Sonoma Creek at the day-use picnic tables, where you can grill and relax to the sounds of a babbling creek. After lunch, go for a stroll, fly a kite, or let the kids frolic in the creek. There are picnic tables scattered across a few other remote locations as well.

5. Stargazing

A feature specific to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is the Robert Ferguson Observatory.

The ring of hills that keep this park private also reduces urban light pollution, perfect for observing the heavens on a blanket or through the three large telescopes at the observatory. Once a month, public star parties are held with solar observing during the day and stargazing at night.
